Computing at our school

The aim of the John Clifford Primary computing curriculum is to help children become digital citizens, with an understanding of how technology works and how to use it safely.

The children at John Clifford will create a range of multimedia and digital projects, using their computing skills. These include word processing, images, animation and coded programmes.

The computing curriculum closely links with Mathematics and PSHE through e-safety. However, our curriculum also allows lots of opportunities to link computing learning with other subjects including English, Art, Music, History and Geography.

Why do we teach computing at John Clifford?

Digital skills and literacy

In an increasingly digitised world, children need to be able to use technology proficiently. This ranges from simple coding to programming small robotic devices. Our curriculum encompasses a wide range of digital skills.

e-Safety

It is our responsibility as educators to keep children safe, and e-safety is a significant part of that. Alongside our PSHE coverage, we ensure that our computing lessons teach about personal security online, copyright and altered images.

Life skills

We are never far away from devices now, and as such being computer/device literate is an important life skill. Children need to be taught how to use devices functionally including word processing, publishing and using spreadsheets.

How do we teach computing at John Clifford?

Sequential learning

We teach new concepts by first unpacking complex terms and ideas, exploring these ideas in unplugged and familiar contexts, then repacking this new understanding into the original concept. Finally, we then apply new knowledge by creating our own projects.

Creating projects

We use project-based learning activities to provide pupils with the opportunity to apply and consolidate their knowledge and understanding. Design is an important, often overlooked aspect of computing! These projects give purpose to work and often link to other curriculum areas.

Making computing concrete

Computing doesn’t always have to be on a computer. We try to provide the children with opportunities to apply computational thinking and programming skills in other areas with real-world examples provided.

Much of our work in school uses free software that can be accessed at home.
